I'll get it started in here with the first Birdman episode I've never seen.
201- Blackwatch Plaid - The instant the episode started, it blew my expectations of badness (which were VERY high) right out of the water. The beginning of the episode establishes (with repurposed Hanna-Barbera animation like they like to do) that Secret Squirrel is a flasher. This is insanely bad because being a flasher or even being a pervert is not remotely a part of Secret Squirrel's character at all, ever. It's like they said "let's do a flasher episode, what Hanna-Barbera character wears a trenchcoat?" Actually, it's not "like" that, because that is probably 100% literally what happened. That is Epic Movie-comparable lazy writing. The show took some huge dips in quality starting with this episode. Gary Cole, who was always good before this, does really jokey, shitty line-readings here, probably at the creators' direction. (re voice acting, I really feel embarassed for Stephen Colbert because he is really not funny on this show ever.) Also I guess they cut the animation budget significantly in order to get more than three episodes per year, because all of the animation in this one is reused or done in fairly bad Flash.
THINGS THAT SEEMED LIKE THEY WERE DESIGNED TO PISS ME OFF:
- An insane overload of live-action (again, animation budget) including a scene of live-action security footage that becomes a montage of live-action Birdman doing goofy "funny" shit (w/ goofy music).
- In said goofy montage, a callback to Booboo and Birdman being gay.
- TWO "Did you get that thing I sent you" callbacks, one of them being a loooong, full-screen shot of the text "Did you get that thing I sent you?"
Thank god I gave up on the show when I did because these things would have made me punch through a wall if I saw it at the time.
It is mind boggling to me that anyone likes this show.
I was planning on watching a bunch in a row but that one episode gave me a headache! It could be because I watched it as a bad-quality AVI file hooked up to my television screen, but it could be because of the badness of the show. I'm going with the latter.
